France’s UNCOVR raises €6 million: after patient records, AI moves into the operating room

More than 400 million surgical procedures are performed worldwide every year. A growing proportion are filmed in their entirety. Yet once the operating-room doors close, most of that information remains unused.
This is the paradox Uncovr is seeking to address. The startup has announced a $7 million funding round, equivalent to approximately €6 million, led by Index Ventures with participation from Seedcamp, Frst, No Label Ventures, Entrepreneurs First and several business angels specialising in healthcare and artificial intelligence. Already deployed in operating rooms across the United States and Europe, the company is developing a platform capable of analysing surgical videos automatically to generate operative reports and billing codes.
The problem it is attempting to solve is far from anecdotal. According to data cited by the company, a multi-institutional study covering more than 1,000 cases across 500 healthcare systems found that most operative reports omitted more than 70% of the recommended clinical information. The platform’s initial deployments also identified critical or billable steps missing from the documentation in 16% of analysed cases, with an average reimbursement discrepancy of approximately 10%.
These documentary gaps have consequences extending far beyond hospital administration. They affect continuity of care, complicate the analysis of postoperative complications and reduce the quality of the data available to improve surgical practices.
Uncovr’s initiative illustrates a deeper evolution in healthcare AI. The first wave of digitisation focused on medical records. The second concentrated on imaging and assisted diagnosis. Over the past two years, a third generation of companies has begun automating medical documentation using large language models. Artificial intelligence is now beginning to address the medical procedure itself.
Uncovr’s technology analyses surgical videos second by second to identify the actions performed, their sequence, the events occurring during the procedure and the decisions made by practitioners. Using this clinical understanding, the platform automatically generates a structured operative report and the information required for administrative coding.
For many investors, surgery today represents what medical imaging was a decade ago: an immense reservoir of data that remains largely underexploited.
The issue is all the more strategic because the leading surgical-robotics companies, beginning with Intuitive Surgical and its da Vinci system, already control some of the infrastructure used to collect this data. The battle is no longer solely about robots or software. It now concerns the ability to assemble the datasets that will train future surgical-assistance systems.
This is probably where the real investment thesis behind Uncovr lies. Automated report generation is the platform’s first visible application. Its potential value, however, lies in building a large-scale database of structured surgical information. Just as textual corpora enabled the emergence of large language models, and driving data powered Tesla’s autonomous systems, operative data could become one of the most strategic assets for the next generation of medical AI.
This prospect also explains Index Ventures’ interest. The fund is not merely financing a hospital-productivity tool. It is betting on the emergence of a new infrastructure layer designed to make surgery measurable, analysable and usable by artificial intelligence systems.
The founding team provides another point of differentiation. Alongside CEO Ines Iraki is Johann Diep, an ETH Zurich-trained engineer who previously worked on AI systems for the European Space Agency. The project also draws on the expertise of Professor Eric Vibert, an internationally recognised hepatobiliary surgeon and a pioneer in surgical-data research.
Having learned first to manage patient records and then to interpret medical images, artificial intelligence is now beginning to understand what happens inside the operating room itself. Uncovr’s funding round reflects this new stage. Behind the automation of operative reports lies a broader challenge: building the data infrastructure that could power the next generation of AI-assisted surgery.
