French air-defence startup ALTA ARES raises €50 million to develop an autonomous counter-drone system

Aerial warfare is undergoing a transformation comparable to that triggered by the emergence of tanks in the early 20th century or guided missiles during the Cold War. Innovation no longer lies solely in firepower or platform sophistication. It increasingly depends on the ability to detect, identify and neutralise, in real time, a growing number of low-cost autonomous threats.
Against this backdrop, Alta Ares, a French-Ukrainian company specialising in air defence and embedded artificial intelligence, has announced a €50 million funding round led by Air Street Capital, with participation from Cherry Ventures, OTB Ventures and Harpoon Ventures. The investment will enable the company to accelerate the development of air-defence systems integrating interceptors, radars, data-fusion software and artificial intelligence. Already operating across several theatres in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, the company now intends to move to industrial scale.
The funding comes as the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have exposed the limitations of traditional air-defence architectures. Western systems were designed to intercept limited numbers of fighter aircraft, helicopters or cruise missiles. The emergence of mass-produced kamikaze drones has fundamentally altered that equation.
A modern air attack can now involve several hundred drones and dozens of missiles simultaneously. Ukrainian authorities have regularly reported nights during which more than 500 aerial threats were launched against critical infrastructure. In such scenarios, the challenge is no longer simply to intercept a target, but to identify and prioritise several hundred threats within seconds.
This development has created a major economic imbalance. The drones used in saturation attacks often cost only a few tens of thousands of euros, while the systems deployed to neutralise them may rely on missiles costing several hundred thousand euros each, if not more. This asymmetry is calling into question defence models inherited from the Cold War.
Alta Ares was born directly from this operational reality. Founded in 2024 by Hadrien Canter, a drone pilot and the company’s CEO; Stanislas Walch, formerly a regulatory adviser; Théo Bondarec, a computer-vision specialist; Hadrien Bernard, a software engineer; and Alain Henry, formerly of IBM Europe and the United States, the company is pursuing an approach centred on the complete automation of the air-defence chain. Its objective is not to develop yet another interceptor, but to build an integrated capability combining detection, identification, data fusion and the automated neutralisation of threats.
The company is currently developing two families of interceptors. The X-Lock system is designed to neutralise Shahed-136-type drones within a range of approximately 15 kilometres. Black Bird targets faster threats, including KH-101 cruise missiles and certain glide bombs, with a stated range of 30 kilometres. These effectors, however, represent only one component of the company’s architecture. Its real differentiation lies in the software layer and artificial-intelligence capabilities that orchestrate the entire system.
Artificial intelligence now occupies a central role in modern air defence. Radars, optical sensors and intelligence systems generate volumes of data that a human operator can no longer process alone. Algorithms can fuse this information, classify threats automatically, assign priorities and guide interception systems at a speed beyond the reach of traditional command chains.
This evolution is gradually bringing air defence closer to the logic of autonomous vehicles. In both cases, the system must perceive its environment, interpret the available data, make a decision and trigger an action in real time. The difference lies in the severity of the consequences and the complexity of the tactical environment.
One of Alta Ares’ main claimed advantages is its direct exposure to military operations. Deployed across several conflict zones simultaneously, the company benefits from a continuous flow of data and operational feedback. This proximity to the battlefield enables a far more rapid improvement cycle than traditional defence programmes, which are often structured around development processes extending over several years.
This model is now attracting investors from the artificial-intelligence ecosystem. The role played by Air Street Capital illustrates the growing convergence between civilian technologies and military applications. Historically focused on AI companies, Nathan Benaich’s fund sees autonomous defence systems as a natural extension of advances in data processing, computer vision and automated decision-making.
Beyond Alta Ares itself, the transaction reflects the emergence of a new European defence ecosystem. Long dominated by major industrial groups, the sector is seeing the arrival of a generation of startups capable of rapidly developing technologies validated directly in operational conditions. Companies such as Helsing in Germany, Quantum Systems in drones and now Alta Ares in air defence illustrate this shift.
The stakes extend far beyond the counter-drone market. Behind these technologies, a new military architecture is taking shape in which algorithms are becoming as strategic as missiles, sensors and combat platforms. Air superiority will no longer depend solely on available firepower, but also on the ability to process information faster than the adversary.
The €50 million raised by Alta Ares will fund recruitment, international expansion and the strengthening of its industrial capabilities in France and Ukraine. More importantly, however, the transaction marks another step in the emergence of a new generation of autonomous defence systems. Having transformed civilian applications, artificial intelligence is now establishing itself as one of the principal drivers of military innovation. In this new technological race, computing speed could become as decisive as missile range.
