Artificial intelligence first transformed knowledge work. Customer service, software development, marketing, finance and document analysis were among the earliest fields to benefit from recent advances in generative models. It is now beginning to move into the heart of companies’ physical operations.
The announcement of up to €49 million in funding for CameraMatics illustrates this shift. Founded in Dublin in 2016 by Mervyn O’Callaghan and Simon Murray, the company develops a fleet-intelligence platform combining onboard video, telematics, behavioural analysis and artificial intelligence. The transaction brings together Blume Equity, the Ireland Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF) and Goodbody Capital Partners on behalf of AIB.
Vehicles are becoming digital assets
The gradual integration of sensors, cameras, geolocation systems and diagnostic devices into vehicles is fundamentally changing the equation. Every truck, van and service vehicle now continuously produces information about its environment, use and operating condition.
Fleet managers therefore have unprecedented visibility into driving behaviour, operating conditions, energy consumption and operational incidents.
These developments are gradually transforming commercial vehicles into connected digital assets. For businesses, the challenge is no longer simply to know where their vehicles are, but to understand what is happening inside and around them in real time.
Safety becomes a predictive discipline
Safety represents one of the largest cost items for major commercial fleets. Accidents, vehicle downtime, legal disputes, insurance deductibles, repairs and operational interruptions weigh heavily on operating accounts. In some sectors, reducing the incident rate by just a few percentage points can generate several million euros in annual savings.
This is precisely where artificial intelligence is finding one of its most tangible applications.
Through onboard video analysis and real-time processing of telematics data, next-generation platforms seek to identify dangerous situations before they escalate into accidents.
Harsh braking, driver distraction, insufficient following distances, recurring behaviours and driving anomalies can now be detected automatically.
The logic is no longer one of investigating an incident after the event, but of preventing it. Road safety is gradually adopting a predictive approach comparable to the one already observed in industrial maintenance and cybersecurity.
Insurers, the discreet drivers of transformation
Another dynamic is accelerating the market: insurers are closely monitoring developments in video-telematics technology.
For them, these platforms offer a way to understand risky behaviour more clearly, determine responsibility more accurately following an incident and reduce costs associated with fraud and legal disputes. Over time, fleet data could become a central component in calculating commercial insurance premiums.
From dashboards to operational agents
The first generations of fleet-management solutions were primarily designed to produce metrics and dashboards. The most advanced platforms are now seeking to become prescriptive.
Their objective is no longer simply to report information, but to support decision-making. Eventually, these systems could automatically recommend route changes, anticipate maintenance operations, adjust vehicle allocation or trigger incident-management procedures.
This development forms part of a broader transition across enterprise software: the move from analysis to execution.
A global battle already under way
The market in which CameraMatics operates is difficult to isolate, as the boundaries between fleet management, telematics, onboard video, insurance and operational intelligence are rapidly being redrawn. Existing estimates nevertheless provide an indication of its scale.
The global fleet-management market was valued at between $33 billion and $38 billion in 2024–2025 and could reach nearly $70 billion by 2030. The broader commercial-vehicle telematics segment was estimated at $61.5 billion in 2024, with projections reaching $130 billion by 2030.
Video telematics, CameraMatics’ historical core market, remains smaller but is growing more rapidly. Valued at $1.69 billion in 2024, it is expected to reach $8.67 billion by 2034. This difference in scale explains why industry players are no longer limiting themselves to onboard cameras, but are moving higher up the value chain towards operational-intelligence platforms covering safety, insurance, maintenance, energy consumption and the management of physical assets.
Market leaders and newcomers: a sector undergoing profound change
The telematics and fleet-management market was long dominated by companies specialising in geolocation, regulatory compliance and vehicle tracking. Over the past five years, a new generation of businesses has sought to transform these platforms into operational-intelligence systems capable of using AI to manage physical operations at scale.
Samsara: the industry benchmark
Founded in California in 2015, Samsara has become the sector’s most prominent company. Listed in New York, it has gradually moved beyond fleet management to build a “Connected Operations” platform. Its offering connects vehicles, industrial equipment, trailers, construction sites and infrastructure to provide a unified view of field operations.
In 2026, Samsara is approaching $2 billion in annual recurring revenue and processes data generated across tens of billions of kilometres travelled each year. The company now presents itself as an “Operational AI” provider capable of automating certain operational decisions in transportation, construction, energy and public services.
Motive: from compliance to physical AI
Previously known as KeepTruckin, Motive began by providing regulatory-compliance devices to US transport operators. The company now claims nearly 100,000 customers across logistics, construction, energy and manufacturing.
Its platform combines driver safety, fleet management, equipment tracking, maintenance and expense analysis. Motive now uses the term “Physical AI” to describe its ambition: applying artificial intelligence to real-world physical operations. The company filed for an initial public offering in the United States in late 2025.
Geotab: the discreet giant of vehicle data
Based in Canada, Geotab is one of the sector’s longest-established companies. It connects approximately six million vehicles and assets worldwide and processes more than 100 billion data points every day.
Its identity remains strongly focused on telematics, vehicle-data analysis and compliance. Geotab also has a significant presence in fleet electrification, connected vehicles and integration with car manufacturers. While Samsara emphasises operations, Geotab remains one of the global leaders in automotive data.
Verizon Connect: the power of telecommunications
A subsidiary of Verizon, Verizon Connect emerged from several acquisitions in geolocation and fleet management. Its positioning remains more focused on traditional fleet management: vehicle tracking, route optimisation, asset management and field-team productivity.
Its principal advantage lies in its installed base among major North American companies and public authorities.
Lytx: the onboard-video pioneer
Founded in the late 1990s, Lytx is often regarded as the inventor of modern video telematics. The company specialises in onboard video analysis to improve road safety and reduce insurance claims.
Its expertise is based on decades of accumulated driving-video data. While Geotab dominates telematics and Samsara connected operations, Lytx remains a global benchmark in behaviour-based safety.
AI-native newcomers
Netradyne
Founded by former Qualcomm executives, Netradyne develops computer-vision systems capable of analysing driver behaviour in real time. Its Driver•i product is often presented as one of the market’s most advanced AI-assisted safety systems.
The company illustrates the rise of a new generation of players whose DNA is rooted more deeply in artificial intelligence than in telematics.
Platform Science
Platform Science is pursuing a different approach. The company develops an open software platform for commercial vehicles. Its ambition is to create an Android equivalent for trucks and commercial fleets, allowing third-party applications to operate on a shared software infrastructure.
Foretellix
Operating at the intersection of simulation, safety and autonomous vehicles, Foretellix works on validating automated-driving systems. The company is not directly involved in fleet management, but is contributing to the growing convergence between telematics, artificial intelligence and autonomy.
