ISAR AEROSPACE: from Bavaria to Norway, a new European ambition in space

Orbit on its second flight, five more launch vehicles already in production and a factory designed to scale up: Isar Aerospace has reached a major milestone. Spectrum’s success is a tangible example of a new generation of European space companies bringing together technology, capital and industrial capabilities to open up new routes to space.
Seventeen months after a first flight that ended after around 30 seconds, Spectrum has successfully reached orbit. On 5 September 2026, at 22:12, the ISAR AEROSPACE launch vehicle lifted off from Andøya, Norway. Success on only its second attempt gives Europe’s space sector another operator capable of reaching orbit.
In its mission report, Isar says it completed the main flight phases, through to payload separation following the orbital circularisation manoeuvre. The company says it is still working with its customers to confirm the satellites’ status. For the company founded in 2018, the result already marks a turning point: its launcher now has an orbital flight to its name.
Europe now has another operator to expand its launch capabilities. It already had the Ariane and Vega launcher families; Isar builds on this base with another company, industrial operation and launch site capable of supporting new missions.
For the teams, this also provides a new foundation for their work. The first test flight had already informed that learning process. In its report published in September 2025, Isar identified the events that caused the failure and outlined the changes made to the launcher’s control system. The progress between the two flights shows the value of that experience.
In Parsdorf, a factory designed for series production
The next stage already has an address: Parsdorf, near Munich. Isar is developing a factory there designed to produce up to 40 Spectrum launch vehicles a year. The company has chosen to handle almost all design, manufacturing and testing in-house, with extensive use of automation. Its aim is to establish the capacity needed for series production.
This approach brings the teams that design the vehicles closer to those that manufacture and test them. Any issue identified can be traced to a component, a process or a design decision. Experience from one launch campaign can then inform preparation for the next. The organisation is designed to accumulate knowledge and translate it into product improvements.
For Europe, these combined capabilities represent a significant, lasting asset: trained teams, installed equipment, established procedures and the ability to manage complex projects. Isar’s expansion strengthens the industrial base that will support future missions and, eventually, new generations of launch vehicles.
Other European specialists are already involved. Berlin-based Exolaunch integrated the five satellites for the second flight into its deployment system before they were shipped to Andøya. The payloads came from projects in Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Norway and Bulgaria. Mission preparation therefore brought together the launcher manufacturer, an integration specialist and several satellite teams.
Spectrum’s success creates further opportunities for these collaborations. New missions can generate business for suppliers, sustain expertise and help scientific and technological projects progress to testing in orbit. A launcher also becomes infrastructure that supports the growth of other companies.
Germany and Norway broaden Europe’s access to space
Together, Germany and Norway are broadening the geographical base of Europe’s space capabilities, Andøya is designed to serve polar and sun-synchronous orbits. Paired with Spectrum, which is intended to carry up to 1,000 kg to low Earth orbit, the site offers an additional route to space for small satellites and certain dedicated missions.
This diversification follows a stated goal of the European Space Agency (ESA): to develop a broader range of services alongside Ariane and Vega, which operate from French Guiana. Having several launchers, launch sites and industrial organisations gives Europe more options for meeting operators’ needs.
Astroscale and Planet Labs choose Spectrum for upcoming missions
Isar’s first contracts show that its offering appeals beyond Europe. On 1 September, the company announced an agreement with Astroscale Japan to launch ADRAS-J2 in 2027–2028. Developed under a programme run by Japan’s space agency JAXA, this debris removal mission requires a tailored orbital insertion and a specific launch profile, requirements Isar is capable of meeting.
The agreement announced in July with Planet Labs Germany opens up another opportunity, in Earth observation. The German subsidiary of the US group plans to use Spectrum to launch a Pelican satellite, which is due to be assembled at its new Berlin facilities. The project brings the manufacture of a satellite and its launcher closer together on German soil.
These missions give direction to Isar’s industrial development. They connect investment in factories with identified needs and committed customers. The orbital success therefore comes as Isar builds the capacity to serve demand already reflected in several agreements.
Private capital and a European contract to fund capacity expansion
Capital and tangible European backing underpin this growth. In June, ISAR AEROSPACE announced a €270 million Series D round aimed in particular at expanding its operations and series production. Investors are financing the company’s increase in capacity, with the aim of turning its technological development into an industrial business.
In late August, ESA announced a €197.8 million contract with Isar under the European Launcher Challenge, funded primarily by Germany, with contributions from Austria and Norway.
This is how Europe is creating the conditions for a more diverse launch offering. The programme combines launch services with demonstrations of improved capabilities. Rocket Factory Augsburg and PLD Space are also among the first operators awarded contracts. The development of several companies broadens the expertise and options that institutions and commercial customers will be able to draw on.
After reaching orbit, the next challenge is launch cadence
For ISAR AEROSPACE, the next challenge is cadence: completing the vehicles, testing them and conducting successive launch campaigns on customers’ schedules. The full value of the orbital success will emerge through this phase, as Isar builds a valuable track record, improves its processes and establishes the launcher within its customers’ plans.
